                                        ARCHIVAL RECORDING OF HERITAGE PLACES

Archival recordings are intended to provide a visual ‘snapshot’ of a heritage item at a point in time.
Archival recordings are often required as a statutory condition of consent before works can be
undertaken to heritage places, depending on the type of works involved such as change of use and
additions, removal etc. In some situations, authorities can require archival recordings where
heritage is at risk of being damaged or lost. Usually, an archival recording constitutes a
photographic representation of the item, accompanied by base plans and an explanatory report.
Information can be brief and consists of:

                 • Introduction – why the recording is being done
                 • Description of the subject and where it is located in Noosa
                 • History of the subject and statement of significance – to be copied from the Place Card
unless the owner/manager has more up to date information
                 • Plans of the subject with a North arrow on it and locations for photographs marked by
                     numbers 1, 2 etc.
                 • Photographs numbered to match the location
                 • Photograph Guide - A one line caption saying what the photo is. For example “View to the
north facing elevation and entry porch” OR “Interior view to south facing windows and
                     altar” etc.

The recording is to be provided as a PDF document via email or Weshare or Dropbox. Alternatively
it can be provided to Council on a USB stick. It can be prepared by the property owner, a
photographer or a heritage professional. It is intended that a copy be provided to Noosa Library.
Archival recordings are intended to be a record for future generations and can help community
members, historians and heritage professionals to:
                 a) understand the significance of an item
                 b) research the history of an organisation, place, object or community
                 c) guide conservation work, reinstate features or return items to a person or community.
