PLANNING & ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 12 MARCH 2019
Council officer recommendation
A recommendation of this report is to investigate the lowering of the speed limit along Noosa
Drive through consideration by the Traffic Advisory & Speed Management Committee.
Street lighting
Background
Better lighting can also help alert drivers to koalas on roadways. However koalas can occur on
roadways in various parts of the shire at any time and it is impractical to street light all roads,
particularly in rural areas. Street lights can also act as an attractant to other fauna such as micro-
bats and predatory birds which also suffer vehicle strike.

Consultant recommendations
Consultants have recommended that street lights be installed at ‘pinch points’ where there are
multiple vehicle strike records.
Council officer comments
It is not practical to streetlight the large number of identified ‘hotspots’ across the shire,
particularly in rural areas. Based on koala observation and vehicle strike records there is no
recent evidence to suggest that there is a concentration of koalas towards pinch points such as
bridges. Older koala records are evenly distributed along roadways.
Council officer recommendations
No additional street lighting be installed unless there is recent and concentrated koala records in
a particular location.
