PLANNING & ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 12 MARCH 2019
On 18 September 2018 a workshop was convened with key stakeholders representing
Queensland Koala Crusaders, RSPCA, Sunshine Coast Council, University of Sunshine Coast
and TMR to discuss the audit and consider the shire wide scale of the issue. Members of the
group made the following suggestions:
Actions to conserve koalas need to be undertaken as a matter of urgency;
A well-researched population study needs to inform site based actions first e.g. wild dogs
may be a bigger impact in some areas as opposed to vehicle strike;
Better data collection for all fauna species hit by vehicle is required to capture all data
sources (road kill data, KoalaTracker, Australia Zoo). Potentially an App could be used
such as ‘Kangaroo App’;
Broader data capture across the landscape is needed (not just along roadsides) and also
targeted data capture in key areas such as Yurol-Ringtail State Forest is required;
Moveable koala warning signs were considered more effective (corflute, LED) than
permanent signs in alerting drivers of koalas on road. Painting warning alerts on road are
also effective (however may present a slip hazard and are expensive $7000); and
The external stakeholder group requested that development in koala habitat areas cease
immediately and developments in coastal areas should be challenged under federal
legislation as a Matter of National Environmental Significance (MNES).
