5.3 Compaction and Soaked CBR

Standard compaction and single point soaked California bearing ratio (CBR) tests were
undertaken on a bulk sample recovered from Bore 3. The sample was first screened over the
19 mm sieve, as required by the test standard, and was then compacted to 98% Standard dry
density ratio at near to optimum moisture content (OMC). The sample was soaked for a minimum
of four days under a 4.5kg surcharge.

The results of the testing are summarised in Table 3 with a material test report in Appendix D.

5.4 Dispersion

An Emerson class dispersion test was undertaken on a sample recovered from Bore 3. The results
of the testing are summarised in Table 4 with a material test report in Appendix D.

Table 4: Results of Emerson Class Dispersion Testing

The results of the testing indicate that the silty sand material tested to be slightly dispersive.

5.5 Acid Sulfate Soils

Samples were recovered from Bores 1, 2 3 and 6 at 0.25 m intervals and were screened by
measurement of pH after the addition of distilled water (pH f) and peroxide (pHfox). The pHf test
provides a preliminary indication of past oxidation of sulfides resulting in the presence of actual
acid sulfate soils (AASS). The pHfox test provides a preliminary indication of the presence of
unoxidised sulfides and therefore, potential acid sulfate soils (PASS).

Based on the results of the screening tests, selected samples were subjected to more rigorous
acid base accounting (chromium reducible sulfur – SCR) analytical testing to quantitatively assess
the presence or absence of ASS. The results of this testing are discussed further in Section 6.9.2
and detailed report sheets are provided in Appendix D.
