GENERAL COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 13 FEBRUARY 2017

The Strategy identifies tourism and recreation as the primary use of protected areas, but does
not identify which specific activities and developments are appropriate in a protected area setting.
The Nature Conservation Act 1992 Part 17 states the management principles of national parks to
ensure that use is nature-based and ecologically sustainable. Educational, recreation and eco-
tourism activities are to be consistent with the areas natural and cultural resources and values. It
is recommended that these principles be re-enforced in the Draft Queensland Protected Area
Strategy, in particular the cardinal principle of National Parks which is:

A national park is to be managed to-
(a) provide, to the greatest possible extent, for the permanent preservation of the area’s natural
condition and the protection of the area’s cultural resources and values;

A brief submission has been prepared and is included in Attachment 2. It is a recommendation of
this report that the submission be provided to State Government. Submissions close 24 February
2017.
