4.4. Animal Welfare
The clearing of native vegetation has a high potential of negatively impacting fauna and may lead to
distress, injury, illness, orphanage, predation or death of fauna.
Table 6. Strategies to manage animal welfare
Issue Animal welfare
Management Prevent fauna deaths and reduce disturbance to fauna.
objective
Requirements to Before works:
implement
• Ensure that works are not undertaken under environmental conditions that
may result in additional impacts to fauna e.g. extreme weather.
• Ensure that works are timed to occur outside of key breeding seasons.
• A suitably qualified FSC is to undertake a Pre-Clearance survey within two
[2] weeks of works commencing, to identify any potential animal welfare
issues (e.g. active nests). Management strategies should be discussed,
including how clearing can be conducted to minimize the risk to fauna.
• As per Noosa council recommendation, a pre-clearing trapping program will
be implemented to target native ground-dwelling and arboreal fauna:
o Trapping must be undertaken for a minimum of four [4] nights prior to the
commencement of works.
o The following traps can be used:
i. Pitfall traps
ii. Small (Type A) Elliot traps- arboreal and terrestrial
iii. Large (Type B) Elliot traps- arboreal and terrestrial
iv. Cage traps
o Traps will be baited with a mixture of peanut butter, honey and oats.
During works:
• Ensure that the management strategies in 4.3. Fauna Management During
Works are implemented and followed by all personnel.
• Fauna handling and relocation must only be carried out by personnel with a
current Damage Mitigation Permit (DMP) and Animal Rehabilitation Permit
(ARP) from DES.
• FSCs are required to transport injured wildlife to the closest designated
veterinary clinic. Orphaned wildlife, for example unhatched bird eggs may be
relinquished to a suitably qualified wildlife carer. The clinics closest to the
Site are:
Sunshine Coast Vets
(8:30am – 5pm)
(07) 5485 0088
19 Reserve St, Pomona QLD 4568
Eumundi Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre
(6:30am – 5pm)
(07) 5442 8057
1411 Eumundi Noosa Rd, Eumundi QLD 4562
• Invasive and introduced fauna are to be managed ethically by the FSC. This
may include taking the animal to the nearest veterinary clinic for euthanasia.
