GENERAL COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 12 DECEMBER 2022
Sunshine Coast Sports Aviators
SCSA supports Council remaining as trustee and have provided the following information to
support their activity remaining at the reserve:
• Difficulty of re-locating the sport.
• Significant amount of land required for the safe operation of the sport.
• Noise can impact other parties.
• A safety zone is required around the ends of runways.
• Infrastructure encroachments can shut down operations and this site is clear of such
infrastructure.
• SCSA has had no past dealings with DES and is more familiar with Council.
Noosa Model Flyers
NMF supports Council remaining as trustee and have provided the following information to support
their activity remaining at the reserve:
• Long site history without any complaints.
• Minimal site footprint and low impact operation.
• Site is of benefit to the community as a recreational flying and model flying site.
• Site is not likely to be impacted by building encroachments.
• There are currently no alternative sites for the sport to continue.
• Changing land managers would not deliver any benefit to NMF other than possible longer
tenure.
• Change of land managers may put at risk future use of the reserve.
Discussion
• Both groups support Council remaining as trustee due to unfamiliarity with DES and concerns
regarding future use of the reserve.
• It should be noted the request from DoR seeks Council’s view on relinquishing trusteeship
of the landing ground reserve.
• For clarity, DoR has not sought Council’s view on the reserve’s suitability for flying activities
outlined in the feedback provided by both groups.
• To address user group concerns, DES has proposed future use and activity within the
reserve will be addressed via consultation with the community and both user groups – see
Section 7 of this report.
• McDermott Aviation also provided unsolicited feedback on future use of the reserve – see
Attachment 8. Their primary concern relates to the reserve’s ongoing capability to provide
a staging post for emergency operations.
• To further address concerns noted above this report also recommends that Council in its
response to DoR attach the feedback provided by SCSA, NMF and McDermott Aviation as
noted in Attachments 6 - 8 regarding suitability of the landing ground for flying activities and
emergency operations.
7. Proposed DES Consultation
DoR’s letter in Attachment 1 states DES will consult with the community and the community
groups on future uses which ensures protection of the long term values and needs of the area.
