An essential part of what is unique about Noosa is the high percentage of interesting, unique, privately owned businesses
in the various villages of Noosa. It is the Noosa Shire villages, and the businesses in them that are one of the unique
features of Noosa. It will be the owners of those shops, their staff and customers, and the villages as a whole that will
suffer if an additional 70 shops suddenly open in this small market.
To give an idea of the scale of the problem, an additional 70 national brand retailers would require sales of approximately
$70million per year to survive. Well over a $1million/week of sales removed from the current economy would have a
devastating effect on the Noosa villages. Noosa Junction, Noosaville, Tewantin, Gympie Terrace, Sunshine Beach,
Peregian would all be permanently effected. Those villages have slowly evolved over decades and it would take decades
again, if ever for people to have the confidence to reopen stores again, as once the stores close, the customers will shop
visiting the villages.
I oppose allowing an additional 70 shops at Noosa Civic as it would have a permanent, devastating effect on the Noosa
economy and permanently change an important part of what is unique about Noosa.
Preferred components of an expansion of Noosa Civic.
An earlier proposed expansion of Noosa Civic included a new Myer store and was based on not opening until Noosa’s
population reached an agreed level that Council thought could justify the additional shops.
This would be far beneficial to the Noosa Community reducing the need to go south to visit Myer, and not being
completed until the population justified the additional shops would lessen the impact on Noosa’s existing retail economy.
I oppose the expansion of Noosa Civic because it doesn’t include Myer and the opening is tied into the population
reaching a level that would justify the additional specialty stores.
State owned corporation jeopardising the local community.
This is probably not relevant as far as the criteria for Council’s decision goes but I find it unfair that Noosa’s economy and
lifestyle is being threatened by a state owned corporation.
