SERVICES & ORGANISATION COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 9 FEBRUARY 2021

REPORT
The purpose of this report is to provide an update on the Mobile Library Service, provide options
for the replacement of the current vehicle and request Council’s endorsement of the
recommended replacement model.

1. History of Noosa Council’s Mobile Library Vehicles

Noosa Council has offered a Mobile Library Service since 1974. The service was established to
provide access to the outlying smaller communities of Noosa Shire. The Mobile Library
connected these communities to library and Council services and became highly valued by
residents.

A new purpose-built bus was purchased in 1992 to improve services offered to outlying areas of
the Noosa community including Boreen Point, Pomona, Kin Kin and Peregian Beach.

The current Mobile Library was commissioned in 2006, and with a lifespan of approximately 16
years, was expected to remain in operation until approximately 2022. Now 15 years old with
mechanical and structural issues, the trailer and prime mover are nearing their end of life and the
service is increasingly off-the-road to undertake repairs.

2. Current Mobile Library Service

The current Mobile Library vehicle is a prime mover and semi-trailer - 19m long, providing 45m2
public space and holding approximately 6,000 items. It includes two slide-out extension pods to
operate like a small branch library on wheels and provides all-ability access to remote library
services.
