SERVICES & ORGANISATION COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 9 FEBRUARY 2021

Pre Covid and Post Covid Differences.
Obviously, it is a difficult year to report on in relation to visitor statistics given that the Covid
pandemic impacted from March 2020.
Tourism Noosa have reported on their “business as usual” trends for tourism up to the March
quarter 2020 and then subsequently reported on the impact of Covid through to the June quarter
2020. Naturally, these tell two very different stories.
The pre-Covid statistics were very promising. Record-breaking visitation had occurred in the first
three quarters of the 19/20 financial year. Importantly, the average increase in visitor spend in
that period was also very promising as per the graph below.

This was largely been driven by the increase in interstate visitors which is the primary focus of
Tourism Noosa for marketing. Interstate visitors generally have longer stays and undertake
higher local spending. Again, looking at the statistics up until March 2020, it is clear that
interstate visitors provide greater yield per visit than intrastate (Queensland) visitors.

However, it is clear that the international market was significantly impacted by the Covid-19
pandemic. The international tourism market has been a particular focus for Tourism Noosa in
recent years. Like interstate visitors, international visitors tend to stay longer and spend more.
Prior to Covid-19, this market was growing and while the traditional International markets of New
Zealand and the UK remained strong, the USA market had also seen record spending up until
Covid. However, the last quarter of 2020 put an end to international travel.
