PLANNING & ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 7 MAY 2019
Considering this and the information gained from the Stage 1 process, the following actions are
proposed for Council’s consideration to continue to advance this idea:
1) Rather than seeking to formally establish an institute either legally (as a separate entity and
or physically) initially, that progress towards this outcome be made by Council taking a lead
role in the identification of activity, action, research and information already occurring.
2) That Council engage further with a range of organisations, groups and individuals already
in this space in developing a clear strategic agenda aimed at both defining the key
sustainability challenges we face and addressing these collectively and collaboratively
either via research, partnerships, action or solution development.
3) Investigation and scoping be undertaken into the development of a web based
portal/repository to capture existing sustainability activity. This could be openly available
and accessible by all, providing an invaluable one stop place to source and access a range
of information, research and action occurring across our Shire, region and beyond if
appropriate.
Council may look to work with a University and/or technology company in the design and
development of an appropriate repository/portal. This portal/platform could be used to
aggregate existing sustainability activity, align and organise resources, explore alliances
and partnerships where appropriate and develop a pathway and strategic direction for
sustainability research, activity and solutions.
4) Council receive a further report for consideration outlining the findings and progress of the
above 3 actions. The report will outline the identification of key sustainability challenges to
inform the development of a strategic agenda for potential research, action and investment.
It will also identify what action, research etc. has been done to date around these issues
and by whom.
In advancing the above actions further engagement will occur with key local organisations,
institutes, community members and experts in this space to develop the ideas, establish a
strategic agenda, create a network and further identify activity and research that should be
captured.
The above actions will be progressed over the coming months, with updates provided to Council
at key steps. Subject to progress and effectiveness of these actions and effort it may lead to the
formation of a Noosa specific Institute in the future however prior to advancing to any next stage
Council consideration will occur. Refer Figure 2.
