Numerical Modelling of Entrance Configurations
3.5.5 Noosa River Flow
A boat-mounted ADCP was used to measure velocity profiles while the boat traverses a section of
the river (typically a cross-section). The total flow through the transect is calculated by integrating the
velocity profile data vertically from the bottom-most to the top-most bin and horizontally/temporally
across each transect. This provides ‘instantaneous’ flow measurements that can be used to calibrate
the hydrodynamic model. ADCP transects were obtained at the following locations (indicated in
Figure 3-4):
• Neap tide cross-sectional transects at Dog Beach, Noosa Sound, Munna Point and Noosaville on
14 March 2019.
• Spring tide cross-sectional transects at Dog Beach, Noosa Sound, Munna Point and Noosaville
on 20 March 2019.
• Spring tide cross-sectional transects at Dog Beach on 21 March 20192.
The tidal flow calibration results are shown in Figure 3-9 and indicate the following (positive/negative
flow indicates flood/ebb tide conditions in the lower river):
• The peak ebb and flood flow conditions at Dog Beach are predicted accurately during the neap
and spring tide periods.
• Tidal flow at the Noosa Sound transect location is accurately represented by the model.
• Tidal flow at the Munna Point transect location is accurately represented by the model, noting that
the peak flood flow during the spring tide period was not perfectly captured during the data
collection campaign.
• Tidal flow at the Noosaville transect location is accurately represented by the model. This is
considered a key model calibration location since the data represents a ‘complete’ cross-sectional
flow measurement (as opposed to only measuring a portion of the instantaneous river flow at the
other transect locations).
Snapshots of the measured and modelled currents at Dog Beach during the peak flood and ebb
conditions are also shown in Figure 3-10.

Long-sectional transects were also obtained on this date but have not used for flow calibration purposes. The long-sectional data will
be used to investigate the peak current conditions occurring at Dog Beach.
