Dear David
Re: Odour Model Result for Dwelling at 185 Top Forestry Road –
Proposed Poultry Growing Sheds, Ridgewood
Further to your request, MWA Environmental has undertaken further odour modelling to
respond to the request from Noosa Council1 to clarify the odour outcome for a dwelling at 185
Top Forestry Road, Ridgewood.
MWA Environmental has reviewed aerial imagery of 185 Top Forestry Road and, whilst there
appear to be a number of structures associated with this property located within the road
reserve, the dwelling is assumed to be the structure setback approximately 10 metres from the
northwestern boundary of Lot 5 on RP810738. The location of the dwelling is shown on
Figure 1.
The most accurate assessment of the odour exposure for a specific location is through the use
of a ‘discrete receptor’ location in the dispersion model. The use is discrete receptors for
critical locations ensures that inaccuracies associated with contouring from gridded receptor
data are avoided. The use of discrete receptors is consistent with the method utilised for the
purposes of the Noise and Air Quality Impact Assessment – Proposed Poultry Growing Sheds
– 124 Top Forestry Road, Ridgewood (MWA Environmental, 31 July 2014).
Aside from the inclusion of the additional discrete receptor no other changes were made to the
odour modelling described in the Noise and Air Quality Impact Assessment (31 July 2014).
The predicted 99.5th percentile 1 hour average odour concentration at the dwelling at 185 Top
Forestry Road (refer Figure 1) is 2.47 Odour Units. This is compliant with the 2.5 Odour Unit
99.5th percentile 1 hour average odour guideline.

I note that the odour emission rate estimation method applied in accordance with the Best
Practice Guidance for the Poultry Industry – Plume Dispersion Modelling and Meteorological
Processing (PAE Holmes for DEEDI, May 2011) is based upon an emission ‘K Factor’ (scaling
factor) of 2.2 which is set to “encompass the outer envelope of the results from several
randomised runs” i.e. it is a generally conservative emission rate basis.
Recent odour sampling results from South East Queensland poultry sheds operating at a lower
stocking density, as proposed for the Ridgewood development, have demonstrated that
average ‘K Factors’ in the order of 1.7 are being achieved. If this contemporary odour
emission rate basis is considered then the predicted 99.5th percentile 1 hour average odour
concentration at the 185 Top Forestry Road dwelling would be 1.9 Odour Units.
I trust that the above information is suitable for your requirements. If any clarification or
additional information is required please contact the undersigned on (07) 3002 5500.
Yours sincerely
