4      BUSHFIRE RISK QUALITATIVE ASSESSMENT

4.1      Past Fire History
Several prominent bushfires have occurred in the northern Sunshine Coast and Noosa region in
recent years. The frequency of fire events appears to have significantly increased since 2015 and
peaked in late 2019 during what is known as the Black Summer bushfire season of 2019-2020.
The frequency of fires has abated since 2021 following repeated La Nina summer wet seasons
which have significantly suppressed typical fire weather and fuel load availability. The wet
seasons have contributed to significant vegetation and fuel load growth throughout SEQ.
A substantial bushfire broke out on 5th September 2019 to the south of the site in the Peregian
Springs bushland and burnt on a northerly trajectory through coastal open forest and eventually
paperbark wetland on the eastern foreshore of Lake Weyba. The fire extinguished near Area 3
within the highly flammable SU7 paperbark wetland community interface with the golf course and
modified vegetation areas between Area 3 and the paperbark community (refer Plates 23 and
24). The fire forced the evacuation of thousands of residents and took about two days and the
efforts of over 100 fire crews to be brought under control.
