The Calile Noosa - Peer Review Rev. B 17.08.22
3 Noosa Design Principles
“Noosa has been shaped not only by nature, but also by the actions of passionate
residents, architects, designers, community groups and the Council… Maintaining
Noosa’s point of difference is the joint responsibility of residents, local businesses and
Council. The challenge is, when faced with a difficult decision, to avoid compromising
our standards… [The Noosa Design Principles] outlines the principles that have
fashioned Noosa’s distinctiveness and that will continue to set Noosa apart into the
future.” – Noosa Council CEO, 2015
3.1 Iconic Place
“The Noosa Shire community seeks –
(a) built environments which fit into and do not dominate the natural environment; and
(b) confidence that population growth and associated change does not adversely impact
upon the character, lifestyle and environment enjoyed by its residents.”
The proposed built environment for this development is intended to be integrated into the
landscape by incorporating natural materials and finishes that complement the site and
surrounds. Noosa is renowned for its world class natural beauty that has been so carefully
protected and nurtured by many generations of residents who have been passionate about
caring for this iconic place.
So, it is also important to recognise that we need to share this lifestyle with visitors by
encouraging all levels of tourism to the region. Surprisingly, Noosa has not yet offered the
high quality of accommodation that would be expected, so such a world class proposal
should be encouraged and supported by both Noosa Council and its residents.
The developer proposing this resort is one of Queensland’s most respected families, the
Maloufs, which has produced several generations of family members who have pursued
design excellence in every aspect of their projects and operations. This should provide the
Noosa community with the confidence that this development will not adversely impact upon
the character, lifestyle and environment enjoyed by its residents.
3.2 Sensitive Growth and Development
“Meet future demands without adversely impacting on our natural environment and quality
of life.
The natural landform and landscape should not be compromised by unsuitable
development.
Works should not have a detrimental impact on our waterways.
New developments are expected to meet the vision and desired outcomes specified in the
planning scheme.
Encourage innovative design that meets appropriate development standards.
Build on and strengthen our uniqueness by continually innovating.
Open space will remain a priority even though the demand for car parking seems limitless.”
As has been demonstrated in section 2 of this review, this development will meet (and
surpass) the vision and desired outcomes specified in the Noosa Plan 2020 for sensitive
growth and development, without adversely impacting on our natural environment and
quality of life.
