Native Foresters
5.0 RECOMMENDATIONS
1. The careful placement of new buildings within the identified Northern and Southern
Construction Zones will allow for the retention of additional trees within this area.
Consideration of the potential impact on the Tree Protection Zones (Tree root systems) when
undertaking excavation works should also be made.
2. Clearing within the identified Northern and Southern Fire Management Zones should be
limited to that which is required to achieve the nominated fire setback requirement for the
project. This should allow for the clearing of mid and ground storey vegetation and the
retention of some canopy trees.
3. Hollow-bearing, nest-bearing and/or relictual trees that are of significant size (i.e. 500-800mm
dbh) and that provide structure and breeding habitat for native fauna should be marked for
retention where possible. Where clearing cannot be avoided due to planned expansion of the
facilities, a targeted pre-clearing survey of hollows and nests should be conducted by an
experienced Ecologist immediately prior to the removal or disturbance of mature trees (i.e.
within 48 hours or under suitable conditions).
4. Any hollows from cleared trees should be salvaged and relocated, together with resident
fauna, to the surrounding area.
5. It is recommended that any Koala food trees removed in the conduct of works should be
replaced in a dedicated revegetation Offset Area on the property. These trees should be
replaced at a ratio of at least 4:1.
6. An experienced wildlife spotter-catcher should be present during removal of significant trees.
7. Arboreal habitat supplementation with nest boxes is recommended to compensate for any
loss of existing hollows. Nest boxes need to be regularly monitored to ensure they are not
colonised by ants, bees or other undesirable species.
8. Due consideration should be given to all native fauna, particularly the potential presence of
Koalas, Echidnas, Rufous Fantail during works.
9. Care should be taken to avoid introduction and further spread of undesirable habitat-changing
weeds during works through machinery inspections and hygiene protocols.
10. It is recommended that all Camphor Laurel specimens including fruiting parts be targeted and
appropriately removed and disposed of during clearing/site preparation works.
11. Implementation of sediment control measures to minimise the potential for erosion and
associated adverse effects on water quality and amphibian breeding habitat will be required
to maintain the aquatic ecosystem health of the tributary of Cooroora Creek that flows from
the catchment of proposed works. Monitoring the effectiveness of these measures during
large rainfall events is also recommended.
12. Felled trees should be retained and dispersed in suitable adjacent forest floor areas to
reinstate coarse woody debris, or donated to community revegetation projects to augment
habitat value for reptiles and small mammals.
