ORDINARY MEETING MINUTES 15 SEPTEMBER 2022
3. MAYORAL MINUTES
1 CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF QUEEN ELIZABETH II
Moved: Cr Stewart
That Council, on behalf of the Noosa Community, provide their condolences to the official
State Government of Queensland Condolence Book at Government House Brisbane,
expressing our sorrow at the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.
Carried unanimously.
BACKGROUND
On 8 September 2022, we lost not only our Queen, but we also lost an international icon.
There are very few of us who will remember a time when Queen Elizabeth II was not our
Queen; indeed everyone on this Council has known only one Queen, one sovereign. It
seems like she has always been there and always would be. Countless global leaders
have come and gone but Her Majesty has remained a constant. Indeed Her Majesty
presided over 15 Prime Ministers of the UK during her reign.
In regard to her relationship with Australia, the Queen consulted with 16 Prime
Ministers and 16 Governors-General served in her name. She was the patron of more
than 20 Australian charities and associations.
For 70 years, Queen Elizabeth II reigned as Australia’s Head of State and during her
reign, visited Australia 16 times and saw more of this country than most Australians,
visiting every state and territory.
During a 2002 visit to Australia, Her Majesty remarked:
“For myself, I thank all Australians…I declare again…that my admiration, affection and
regard for the people of Australia will remain, as it has been…constant, sure and true”,
just as ours will always remain with Her Majesty.
It is clear that Her Majesty has been a constant source of stability and steadfast
leadership in an ever-changing world. While The Crown’s role has evolved, Her
Majesty’s great strength and enduring compassion has ensured she remained a leader
who was both respected and loved around the world. The lens in which she viewed world
events was one couched in empathy, understanding and peace. On behalf of the
residents of Noosa Shire, I would like to pass on our deepest condolences to her family
and all impacted by the passing of Her Majesty.
On her 21st birthday on April 21, 1947, while still a princess, Queen Elizabeth II made a
profound royal pledge: “I declare before you all that my whole life whether it be long
or short shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial
family to which we all belong.”
Indeed she did. Her service and her love of country and Commonwealth was beyond
compare. May she rest in peace.
