SOIL AND MULCH

EXCAVATION AND DRAINAGE

Break up and remove any debris from construction works to achieve
required planting depths. Excavate to bring the subsoil to a minimum
of 300 mm below finished design levels. Shape the subsoil to fall
to subsoil drains where applicable, Break up the subsoil to a
further depth of 150 mm. Sub-surface drainage as per the attached
3 details is to be incorporated to all planting areas that are enclosed
. by hard edging, are located on controlled compacted fill and or not
otherwise drained. Install imported or ameliorated topsoil over
subsoil as per spec. Imported and site soil is to be mixed insitu

TOPSOIL - SUPPLY AND PLACEMENT

Turf areas are to be filled with fit for purpose imported topsoil to
a minimum of 100 mm depth over cultivated sub-grade.

Planting areas are to be filled with fit for purpose imported topsoil

to a minimum of 300mm depth over cultivated sub-grade

. 25 ltr tree pits are to be are to be filled with fit for purpose
imported topsoil to a minimum of 0.5m? volume.

* 100Itr trees are to have no less than 4m? soil volume to
support healthy establishment and growth,

© Supplier of imported soils, as well as intended mix is to be
nominated prior to start of works and approved by
Superintendent.

Manufacturer's specifications and details for recommended soil
volumes.

© Add and mix composted material to topsoil when spreading to
help inoculate soil

such as ‘Hydrocell’ or 'Rainsaver’ is recommended following
manufacturers guidelines.

surfaces unless otherwise shown. Feather edges into adjoining

ORGANIC MULCH

Ensure mulch is produced by chipper, aged, comprised of leaf and limb
material of varying sizes, free of foreign matter including rock,
soil/sediment contamination and is applied to all planting areas as per
requirements. Reke to an even surface flush with the surrounding
finished levels. Avoid placement against green plant stems and keep
below tree trunk flares. Mulch to finish level with adjoining edging

Mulch to comply with requirements set out in AS4454:2012- Composts,
Soil Conditioners and Mulches.

Mulch to be free of damaging material and preferably aged for a
minimum of two (2) months after chipping, before being spread on site
Forest blend mulch is the preferred mulch for all areas

Tip mulch is not appropriate for the following reasons

© may not be of uniform size and quality.

o it may contain material from diseased vegetation, which may
spread potentially fatal diseases (e.g, Phellinus), fungus or
pathogens, (e.g. Phytophtora).

© mulch that is not properly composted may introduce weed seeds.

© can often be hydrophobic, causing drought stress in plants.

© possible growth inhibiting properties due to phytotoxic chemicals
e.g, polyphenols

© poorly composted mulch may cause nitrogen draw down, locking
up nutrients needed for plant growth

© may contain metals and other rubbish which may cause a health
risk to workers.

Mulch to be spread before planting to prevent erosion, loss of soil
moisture and weed seed germination.

Mulch is to be installed as per landscape drawing, to a depth of 100mm
unless otherwise specified

Mulch depth is not to exceed 150mm. Deep mulching - particularly with
mulch containing fines - can restrict air flow causing anaerobic
decomposition to take place. A possible side effect of this is alcohol
production which has the potential to damage plant cell walls and roots.
Anaerobic compost may not have a high enough temperatures to
effectively destroy pathogens.

Rake mulch to an even surface level with surrounding finish

Spread mulch so it is smooth and evenly graded between design surface
levels, sloped towards the base of the plant stems

Mulches are not to be in contact with plant stems. Ensure mulch is no
closer to the stem than:

© 50mm for shrubs
0 100mm for trees.

Form a small bermed dish around plant stems to facilitate flow of water
and nutrients to rootball

Preferably, the area beneath tree canopy (dripline) is to be blanket
mulched

Surrounds of plants planted in riplines (plough lines “ripped” into soil to
decompact and loosen soil) and grass areas, provide mulch to 750mm
diameter with trunk at centre.

SEDIMENT AND EROSION

The Contractor shall ensure that measures are undertaken to minimize
erosion of exposed surfaces during the life of the project. Any localized
overland flow causing scour through the site is to be rectified by the
Contractor with appropriate methods determined in consultation with the
Superintendent. The Contractor shall inspect the site after each
significant rain event for erosion.

INORGANIC MULCH

Gravel Mulch Type 1 to be Nom.45mm¢ washed Mary River rounds
installed to a depth of 100mm laid on pinned weed suppressant
geotextile matting

TURF - SUPPLY AND LAY

Turf installed to road verge must be “A” grade Couch with minimum
sod depth of 25 mm, All turf must be installed within 24 hours of
being cut. Runs must butt hard against each other and seams top
dressed with topsoil. Turf to be rolled to provide an even surface
free from depressions and bumps. Any depressions / damage within
turf areas are to be replaced or top dressed with clean river sand
as directed by Superintendent.

CONTAINERISED PLANT MATERIAL

AS2303:18 / NATSPEC.
Tree stock sized 300mm and over is to be compliant with
AS2303:2018- Tree Stock for Landscape Use, and is to be certified
as compliant by an independent level 5 Arborist, Arborist inspection
tags are to be attached fo fhe tree before delivery to site and
remain attached until the stock has been accepted by Council as
Off Maintenance

Superintendent to approve plant material prior to planting
Planting is to be carried out in a manner consistent with good
horticultural practice. Plants are to be planted at correct depth
allowing for ‘settling’. Soil greater than 10mm in depth is not to be
placed over the rootball or against the stem. All 300mm pot and
larger plant material is to be guyed and staked as per advanced
Tree Planting Detail unless otherwise approved by the
Superintendent. Smaller plant stock is to be staked as necessary.
Stakes shall not pass through the rootball of plant at time of
planting or any time thereafter. Nursery stakes are to be removed
within 3 months of planting

Stock may be rejected if plants are

a) undersized proportional to specified container size or if
the root system is underdeveloped

b) oversized proportional to specified container size or
severely root bound

c) unbalanced or uncharacteristic of normal or specified
growth pattern for the species

d) not suitably acclimatised for the specific environment

e) diseased, infested with pests or suffering from other
form of significant stress

f) tree stock is not compliant with AS2303:2018-Tree Stock

for Landscape Use, and is not certified as compliant by
level 5 Arborist

MATERIALS - SUPPLY AND INSTALL

GRAVEL MULCH
Install gravel mulch to Nom.depth of 100mm. Suggested minimum
diameter to be no less than 20mm. Preference is to be given to
the use of recycled concrete product installed as inorganic mulch
where practicable, specifically in areas of lesser visibility. If
recycled concrete product is selected for areas of higher visibility,
such as path edges or in planting areas, ensure the recycled
concrete is of the highest grade possible and free from materials
such as steel and plastic. In general, any recycled concrete product
is to be free of all deleterious materials and rubbish, both
inorganic and organic. Ensure even fall across surface is achieved
to prevent ponding
