3. Details of Submission
I (We), make the following submission:
I strongly oppose the proposed development for a service station to be built next to Good Shepherd Lutheran College.
Firstly is the issue of airborne hazards such as Benzene. The Developer’s response to Council’s issue regarding airborne hazards is that there are no classrooms within at least 100-150m of the petrol station. The proposed petrol station is right next to the school pool and the HPE centre which is where the children spend a considerable amount of time before, during and after school. The airborne hazards that will be emitted from the proposed petrol station are, contrary to what the developers state, right next to where the children spend a lot of their time regardless of whether there is a classroom there or not.
Secondly, Eumundi Noosa Road is already a busy conjested road especially at school drop off and pick up times. There are always motorists speeding through that part of the road regardless of the 40kmh speed limit. A petrol station will only make the traffic worse and cause an even greater risk for children trying to cross that road.
Thirdly, not that long ago a crazed manic tried to blow up a service station in Doonan which is not that far from the location for the proposed service station. There is always a risk of explosions at petrol stations.
Overall, the health and safety of our children should be the utmost priority for Local Government and protecting our children from harmful emissions when they are at school is the responsibility of the community, government and the school. The school and or lutheran church has obviously not taken this very important duty of care owed to our children into account when they decided to sell the land to a developer who proposes to build a service station next to the school. Hopefully the Noosa Council will show more sense and say no to this outrageous proposal.
