EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

RECOMMENDATION
That Council note the report by the Development Officer – Sport and Recreation to the General
Committee Meeting dated 12 January 2015; and:
A. Approve additional funds of $30,000 to be funded in the next budget review to increase
Council’s contribution towards the lighting upgrade at the Cooran Sports Facility; and
B. Authorise the Development Officer – Sport and Recreation to advise relevant parties of the
approved additional funds.
REPORT
In June 2014 Council officers engaged a contractor to conduct a risk assessment on the timber
sports field lighting poles at Cooran Sports Facility. This action was taken in light of a termite
damaged pole at the Noosa Pirates Rugby League facility at Tewantin falling over earlier in the
year.
The subsequent report from the contractor noted that all four of the timber poles at Cooran were
beyond their serviceable life and required removal as soon as possible. As responsibility for the
maintenance of the poles rests with Pomona Cooran Rugby League Club (the Club) who has
tenure over the facility, Council officers then negotiated with the Club regarding the timing of the
removal of the poles.
Agreement was reached that Council would engage contractors to remove the poles once the
rugby league season ceased and at Council’s cost. Additionally, Council officers would assist the
club with applications for funding to both the Sport and Recreation Services’ Get Playing program
and Council’s own community grants program.
The poles were removed in October 2014, after the season was complete, but before the
traditional storm season commenced.
The estimate to replace the poles is $145,000.
1. Funding Applications
The Pomona Cooran Rugby League club can provide $25,000 in kind and $5,000 cash towards
replacing the poles.
