PLANNING & ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 10 APRIL 2018
3. Operations and Responsibilities
3.1. Communications
Communication between Council and volunteers is essential to understanding and achieving mutual
goals and fostering positive relationships. As a Community Bushland Care volunteer, your first point
of contact for bushcare matters in the 12-month Activity Plan is through the Volunteer Group
Coordinator who will liaise directly with their nominated Council Officer for advice where needed. For
matters outside of bushcare, a customer request should be raised through Customer Service to
ensure it is appropriately recorded and handled by the correct department.
Council will facilitate an annual workshop for Volunteer Group Coordinators for which an agenda will
be released prior and volunteers will be encouraged to contribute to the development and growth of
the program.
The Volunteer Group Coordinator is responsible to ensure all volunteer registrations and contact
details are up to date and advise their nominated Council Officer as any changes occur. Volunteer
Group Coordinators may request an updated list of their members at any time and are responsible to
disseminate information to their group members.
For more information on roles and responsibilities, please refer to Appendix 1.
3.2 Workplace Health and Safety
Council strives to be a ‘Zero Harm’ organisation, where people’s safety is the first priority and where
it is not acceptable to cause harm to anyone or the environment. Under Queensland Workplace Health
and Safety legislation, a volunteer is considered a worker and Council must ensure, so far as is
reasonably practicable, the health and safety of its workers. Every person working on Council land is
responsible for their safety and should also be aware of the safety of others.
Council will provide training to ensure the safety of all volunteers in the program:
e Annual WHS Induction specifically designed for all Community Bushland Care Program
volunteers (with Council staff or the Volunteer Group Coordinator)
e Annual First Aid training to two registered volunteers of each group
Volunteers should wear long trousers, sturdy boots and a hat for their own protection. Council will
provide volunteer groups with access to:
e first aid and snake bite kits
e gloves
e sunscreen
e insect repellent
e high visibility long-sleeved shirt or vest
e face masks
e eye protection.
