   6.1 New Volunteers

New volunteers are encouraged to join existing groups and are required to complete a Community
Bushland Care Volunteer Registration form, relevant on-site training and undertake a WHS induction
by the Volunteer Group Coordinator and/or Council.
Being a bushland carer is satisfying work and it makes a real difference to the quality of bushland
habitat in local areas. As a participant, volunteers have the opportunity to:
e learn more about plant identification, natural ecosystems and environmental processes
e participate in social events, workshops and get to know your local community
e join in activities that enhance well-being and fitness
e contribute to protecting and enhancing biodiversity values of the shire
e gain asense of pride and satisfaction in seeing your patch restored
e bea part of the greater network of Community Bushland Care volunteers

   6.2 Activities of Volunteers

Volunteers may undertake the following activities on Council land where there is an agreed 12-month
Activity plan and have undertaken the Community Bushland Care WHS Induction:
e hand weeding — primary, secondary and follow-up weeding and maintenance of sites
  e weed matting and mulching
  e small scale erosion control
e seed collection and propagation of common species
e revegetation — planting endemic species, mulching, stakes/guards, watering and follow-up
      maintenance
e promotion of their own projects
e monitoring of flora and fauna
e other activities as approved through the 12-month Activity Plan.

   6.3. New Groups and/or Sites
To establish a new group or new site, an application to Council is required to be made. Groups and/or
sites must meet the following criteria:
e The project must be on land managed by Noosa Shire Council and have the support of the land
manager and aligned with Council’s policies and plans.
e Conservation of biodiversity and the environment is the primary intent of the project.
e A 12-month Activity Plan is required to be developed by the group in partnership with Council
which outlines group goals, site locations, working bee dates, activities and resource requests.
e The role of Volunteer Group Coordinator must be filled at all times and there should be enough
volunteers to ensure the project is sustainable and able to meet the group’s aims and objectives.
e Volunteers must be committed to undertake relevant on-site training and WHS induction.
Applications can be received at any time of the year and new groups and/or sites will depend on
available resources and level of support required. If you would like to start a new group or new site
and have an interested group of participants, contact your nominated Council Officer who will guide
   you through the process.
