Dear Noosa Council's Your Say
It appears to us that the proposal for the expansion of the Noosa Civic to enable space for two
additional supermarkets, a discount department store, and other shops is totally unwarranted.
Our reasons are as follows:
(1) Assessing the need for more retail outlets for the Noosa Shire, one must take into account the
present unoccupancy of retail outlets in the Shire. As we look around the Shire we see many
empty shops/businesses, some of which have been vacant for many months or even years. We
assume that the Noosa Council has assessed this dreadful situation, which may be an indication
that Noosa has already sufficient retail businesses to support the present population; rather than
be totally focused on the increased revenue in rates from any new retail enterprises. Surely any
Noose Shire business plan regarding this proposal must take into account the population,
present retail business viability, and whether more large stores will ultimately 'kill off more and
more present smaller retail outlets.
(2) The existing Noose Civic design of appalling series of boxes and clunky monstrosities is a
huge blot on the Noosa Shire'landscape. How the present design got past Noosa Council in the
first place amazes us. Whenever we have overseas visitors visiting us we never ever take them
to Noosa Civic but would perhaps take them to Pacific Fair or Sunshine Plaza as they are much
more attractive precincts. To have the Noosa Civic extended would make a tragic mistake even
worse.
(3) When assessing the overall retail business situation in Noosa, it seems to us that priority
ought tobe given to sorting out the mess in Noosa Junction first before contemplating further
work on Noosa Civic. The overall design of Noosa Junction is a catastrophe in that there is no
unified overall structure that presents the user with good planning and friendly integrated
atmosphere. The different elements don't 'talk' to each other: the Transit Station, Sunshine
Beach Road, Noosa Plaza, Noosa Fair, Pinaroo Park don't integrate and communicate with each
other in a user-friendly way. But the major concern is the unknown plan and viability of the site of
the Noosa Bowls Club and the present Target Store. This needs to be sorted out before any
thought of extending Noosa Civic. Any decision regarding retail businesses must take into
account: (a) needs-basis; (b) business viability and potential; (c) design integration and suitable
excellent style that complements the present Noosa image ... not to degrade the Noosa Style of
excellence. Both Noosa Junction and Noosa Civic do not present an image of Noosa Style
excellence.
Yours faithfully.
