Stormwater Management Plan
Noosa Civic Car Wash
2 Current Guidance and Management Practices Summary
A review of current guidance and management practices of water quality and quantity management for car
wash facilities was undertaken.
A review of The Noosa Plan (Noosa Shire Council, 2017) assessment benchmarks and requirements for car
washing facilities was undertaken and is summarised below. Specific outcomes sought for the Water Sensitive
Design Code are included in Appendix A (Noosa Shire Council, 2017).
1. Car washing spaces O29
a. Car washing spaces are designed and managed so that grease and other substances are
prevented from entering the stormwater system; and
b. S29.1 Car washing spaces are to be paved and connected to a drainage system fitted with a
grease trap.
Other relevant Australian guidelines which were reviewed included South Burnett Regional Council (SBRC),
the Queensland Urban Drainage Manual (QUDM), and other local authorities including Cairns Regional
Council, City of Swan, and Mackay Regional Council. A summary of the relevant findings is provided below.
2. General water management
a. Washing area must either be covered (roofed), exclude stormwater or be equipped with a
stormwater diversion system; and
b. Bunding in the form of a ramp at the entry and exit points to divert surface stormwater runoff
away from the pad.
3. Washing area layout
a. The washing area pad must be made from an impervious material such as concrete and should
have a raised perimeter bund at least 75-100mm;
b. Washing area floor should be graded to drain towards a collection point, with a minimum grade
of 1:80 to ensure the wash down is able to drain adequately without pooling or overflowing the
bunds;
c. The wash down bay pad should be of sufficient size to prevent any over-spray or splashes from
escaping its confines; and
> Recommended rule of thumb is for the wash pad to have roughly 2 m greater width and
length than the largest equipment or vehicle to be washed.
4. Wash water management
a. Treated effluent should be discharged to a sewer system;
b. Washing area must not be directed to stormwater;
c. If machinery, engines, engine parts or other equipment are being cleaned, the wash-down bay
must drain through an approved filtration system;
d. The filtration system must consist of a holding tank and an oil/water separator; and
e. The following types are currently approved by Mackay Regional Council Administering
Authority;
i. Coalescing plate interceptor (CPI), or
ii. Vertical tube/gravity separator (VT/GS) (specific flow rate must be a minimum of 1
kilolitre/hour).
