1 PERSPECTIVE : LAKE MACDONALD DRIVE The traditional roof pitch for gabled roofs in the Queensland timber cottage vernacular is 2.5:1 (approximately 22º), early investigations into
incorporating gables into the project revealed that such forms would exceed the 8-metre height limit imposed on the development site. Given the site
- falls by as much as 9 metres from south to north, the primary roof form must follow this slope to remain within the permitted height.
To minimise overall building height—and as a gesture to the region’s timber milling industry, which was a vital part of the local community from as early
as 1890 (particularly prominent in the 1950s)—the roof facing Lake McDonald Drive has been designed to evoke the image of a saw blade. This is
achieved through a series of “skillion” roofs, arranged along the gentle west-east crossfall to represent the teeth of a saw, juxtaposed with the edge of
the main roof form, symbolising the gullet of the blade. In this way, the design pays homage to the historical and cultural heritage of the region.
