RECOMMENDATION
That Council note the report by the Manager Design Services to the Infrastructure & Services
Committee dated 19 August 2014 and the further report by the Director Planning & Infrastructure
to the General Committee Meeting dated 25 August 2014 and:
A. Not support the petition to change the Noosa Junction parking configuration from parallel to
the kerb to angle to the kerb on Sunshine Beach Road and not include the investigation of
the traffic impact of this specific proposal in the 2014/15 Shire-wide traffic Study; and
B. Advise the lead petitioner of this decision.
REPORT
Following an assessment of the implications into changing to an angle configuration, the
following issues have been identified:
That the existing width of the pavement can only cater for 45 degree angle parking which is
less than the desirable 60 degree angle, thus the gain in numbers would not be yielded;
That there would be no free flow lanes in either direction and that the traffic capacity
implications of this could only be fully understood with a thorough traffic modelling of each
scenario; and
Consultation at the time of the Noosa Junction Master Plan revealed a strong objection to
angle parking as proposed in this petition because of the potential reduction in traffic
capacity.
The options for further assessment can be summarised as:
1. Take no action but include the investigation of the traffic impact of this specific proposal in
the 2014/15 Shire-wide traffic Study;
2. Not support the change in configuration but include the investigation of the traffic impact of
this specific proposal in the 2014/15 Shire-wide traffic Study; or
3. Not support the change in configuration and do not include the investigation of the traffic
impact of this specific proposal in the 2014/15 Shire-wide traffic Study.
Option 3 is recommended.
