Re: Proposed amendments to Noosa Plan — unsafe footpaths between Pomona town
centre and Pomona Showground
Dear Mr de Chastel
I wish to make a contribution to the Your Say consultative process regarding The Noosa Plan proposed
amendments.
I am grateful for recent advice from Mr Craig Eldridge, Council’s Infrastructure, Planning, Design and
Delivery Manager, who has stated that planning for additional pathways at Pomona appears in the
Noosa Council Capital Works Program in 2022-23. This advice was provided in the context of
correspondence forwarded to Council from the convenor of the Great Noosa Trail Walk and the Noosa
Show Society that, in their opinion, no safe pedestrian connections exist between the Pomona town
centre and the Pomona Showground. (Enclosures.)
Like many things at Pomona, discussion and lead times can be long. It is worthwhile mentioning also
that, on 2 December 2014, Mr Ross Sanderson, then Noosa Council’s Coordinator of Project Design and
Delivery, wrote these words to several members of the Pomona community, concerning the land
between Mill and Exhibition streets: “Council would not support the installation of any park-type
infrastructure in this flood-prone area apart from pathways that may fit with an overall pathway
network plan.” I take that as the council endorsing a shared pedestrian and bicycle path extension to
Exhibition Street and the Showground as part of an overall Pathway Network Plan for the town.
I note that Noosa Council proposes that pedestrian access facilities targetting children attending the
Noosa District High School Pomona Campus be provided in Clay Street at an estimated cost of
$70,000. This is included in the capital works forward planning.
I request that Council consider bringing forward works to improve pedestrian access to the Showground
in addition to, or in lieu of, the pedestrian access works proposed in Clay Street for the following
reasons:
¢ Pedestrian access between the town centre and the Showground has a higher priority than the
proposed Clay Street works; and
e Ifthe Clay Street pedestrian access is for the benefit of school children, why has the council not
taken into consideration the possibility of providing ‘missing links’ in the access pathways to the
school via Marquee Street (Clay Street- West) and Clay Street?
Essentially, I question why Noosa Council is considering duplicating a facility that already exists, by and
large, for the benefit of school children?
