Shire-wide risk assessment for invasive species
A biosecurity risk assessment by an expert panel identified the highest priority invasive species,
their management feasibility, and appropriate management approach for Noosa Shire. The risk
assessment is a standardised approach developed by Biosecurity Queensland that assesses
and scores each species based on the following:
• Risk – economic, social amenity, human health and ecological impacts, invasiveness
(ability to spread and establish), and potential distribution
• Feasibility of management – current distribution, cost of control and likely effectiveness of
control.
High-priority species are categorised into four management objectives based on the risk
assessment results:
Prevention – not currently found; species prevented from entering the shire
Eradication – small distribution present in the shire; species are eradicated
Containment – moderate distribution; reduce impact and spread
Asset-based protection – widespread distribution; protect high value areas/assets
These management objectives are depicted in the Generalised Invasion Curve below in Figure
4.1 and reflect the most appropriate management response for each invasive species.
