EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Not applicable.

RECOMMENDATION
That Council note the report by the Principal Strategic Planner to the Planning & Environment
Committee Meeting dated 7 July 2020 and support the nomination of Councillor __________
to represent Queensland on the Climate Emergency Australia Strategic Advisory Group.

REPORT
1. Purpose
The purpose of this report is to gain support for the nomination of a Councillor to sit on the Strategic
Advisory Board of Climate Emergency Australia. There is an open call for nominations of a senior
staff member or councillor to represent their respective state on the Advisory Group. Noosa Council
is the only Queensland local government to have declared a climate emergency, with one position
available for Noosa to fill as Queensland’s representative.
Attached is an overview of the next 12 months for Climate Emergency Australia.
2. Background information
In 2019, Noosa Council declared a climate emergency, one of 96 Australian local governments
that represent 8.66 million Australian citizens. Realising the need for a consistent and coordinated
response from local governments, Climate Emergency Australia (CEA) was coined at the National
Climate Emergency Summit in Melbourne in February 2020. CEA is an alliance of local
governments working together to have all levels of government acknowledge and respond to the
climate emergency with urgency and based on scientific evidence. CEA exists to support all
councils (those who have declared a climate emergency, and those who have not) to share
knowledge, resources and to work together to achieve the common goal of effectively responding
to the climate emergency from both a Council and community perspective.
The CEA Strategic Advisory Group will ensure oversight and high-level guidance of the work of
CEA during the 12-month start-up period following its initiation, and act as the voice of local
government across Australia with regards to the work of CEA.
