Dog Beach Sand Nourishment Project: Marine Plant Monitoring Plan 5
Monitoring Plan
2.2 Objectives
The objective of this plan is to measure and evaluate the extent, condition and composition of live
marine plants following construction of the beach nourishment works and to implement adaptive
measures and/or corrective actions, as required, to ensure living marine plants in the disturbance
area are consistent with pre-construction conditions or better.
Refer to Noosa Spit Coastal Protection Environmental Assessment for pre-construction marine plant
conditions within the study site (BMT 6th January 2021: R.A1032.002.00_Environmental
Assessment.docx).
2.3 Responsibilities and Obligations
Noosa Shire Council is responsible for implementing and reporting on this plan.
2.4 Qualifications
Monitoring and associated reporting shall be performed by a qualified ecologist with experience in
marine plant and fisheries habitat site assessments in south-east Queensland.
2.5 Timing
The monitoring schedule will consist of the following site surveys:
• A post construction monitoring survey within two months of construction completion
• Survey conducted six months after the post-construction survey
• Yearly for a period of three years after completion of the works.
Program timing may be adjusted in the event adaptive management measures and/ or corrective
actions are required.
The monitoring programme can conclude after a period of three years following completion of the
works and once it is demonstrated there is no, to very low, potential for long-term impacts on living
marine plants associated with sand nourishment. Conclusion of the program shall be approved by
the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF).
2.6 Monitoring
Monitoring assessments of the study site will be undertaken by a suitably qualified ecologist to
measure and evaluate live marine plants and fisheries resources following construction and to
identify any potential management issues.
Site record sheets and permanently established photo monitoring points will be used for recording
and monitoring marine plant condition. The assessment will involve traverses of the entire study site
to describe and map the presence of land-based marine plant communities and evidence of
associated fisheries habitat values. Site data will be recorded at representative locations and will
include:
• Photographs at established monitoring points
