Ecological Assessment Report
> Conservation significance: Species that are listed as Threatened (Endangered or Vulnerable) under the
EPBC Act, and species that are listed as Threatened or Near Threatened under the NC Act.
> Koala Habitat Trees: Species that are within the genera Angophora, Corymbia, Eucalyptus, Lophostemon
or Melaleuca, with ‘non-juvenile koala habitat trees’ defined by the SPRP as individuals with a height
exceeding 4 m and/or with a circumference at breast height (DBH) exceeding 31.5 cm.
> Declared Pests: Under the Queensland Land Protection (Pest and Stock Route Management) Act 2002
(LP Act), significant weed species are categorised within three classes of declared pests as follows:
- Class 1 - These species have the potential to become serious pests if they are ever introduced into
the State. The aim is to keep these out of Queensland and eradicate any that are found.
- Class 2 - These species are major pests in Queensland. Most have the potential to spread over much
larger areas of the State. The aim is to reduce the rate at which these species invade new areas and
to suppress existing infestations.
- Class 3 - These species are significant weeds that have spread over most of their potential range but
need to be controlled in environmentally significant areas. Their sale needs to be restricted to help
avoid re-invasion of areas where these pests have been controlled.
Observations regarding the use of the area by fauna species were noted, such as the presence of nests, tree
scratches, scats and tracks, together with opportunistic sightings of fauna species present during the time of
survey. Assessments of the habitat types and resources offered by the proposed disturbance areas were
undertaken to evaluate the likely fauna species utilising the area, particularly in terms of threatened fauna
pursuant to the EPBC Act and the NC Act.
‘Call broadcasting’ was also undertaken to survey for amphibian species near water bodies within the
proposed disturbance areas and also along a portion of Six Mile Creek (east of the proposed disturbance
areas). A pre-recorded call was played in the evening in an attempt to illicit a response from the target frog
species. Calls for the threatened species previously recorded in the area were used (i.e. Tusked frog
(Adelotus brevis), Giant-barred frog (Mixophyes iterates) and Green thighed frog (Litoria brevipalmata)).
