3. Details of Submission
I (We), make the following submission:
It has come to my attention that there may be significant impact on the Coral Tree Avenue, Jan Street and Banksia Avenue routes during the
construction phase of the Calile Hotel reportedly commencing 2024. This issue will be compounded by any opening up of the Banksia South
Road with the Banksia North portion. Banksia Avenue has in the past been a through road and has been closed for approximately 30 years.
This road closure was made to prevent a ‘rat run’ developing through urban streets and promoting safety in this corridor for the many families,
pedestrians and small transportation vehicles. This has been a very successful outcome up until the current date. Any increase in the volume
of traffic, mostly in the form of construction vehicles during the construction will greatly increase the risks associated to the community of traffic
accidents and possible injury to community and tourists. When these streets formed part of the ‘rat run’, human (behaviour led to increased
speed of vehicles which was the main risk. The width of the Coral Tree Avenue, Jan St two way transition zone , 90 degree turn) is very narrow
and frequently experiences near misses with the current traffic volume and type. Local community members monitor this section of the road to
reduce the risk of accidents when visitors inadvertently park in this dangerous area. Should the Banksia Avenue portions be joined up again
during construction phase, the local community run the risk of this corridor being KEPT OPEN as people become accustomed to that shortcut.
I strongly object to any relaxation and reopening of the Banksia Street ends at any stage of construction or post construction of the Calile Hotel
due to these increased risks from vehicular traffic and the speed limits that will accompany it. The construction phase could potentially take
many years.
