EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Noosa Main Beach is a favourite recreation area for the local community and visitors, and features
heavily in promotions as a holiday destination. Noosa Main Beach has always been a popular
events venue, notably for water and beach related activities, however, in recent years the
attractiveness of the beach as an event venue has increased. The increase in popularity is primarily
due to two main factors. Firstly, event tourism was encouraged to inject money into the Noosa
economy outside the main holiday periods and secondly, the spectacular setting of Noosa Main
Beach and its iconic status provides significant value adding with more event organisers looking to
add a beach component to their event.
There has been recent public commentary regarding the deleterious and beneficial impacts of
events. While opinions vary, it is evident from stakeholders within the tourism industry and the
community that a sustainable approach to events is required to ensure that the Noosa Brand
remains discernible from other markets and Noosa Main Beach remains an attractive and available
destination for the local community and visitors.
The Noosa Main Beach Events Policy provides a framework to guide the use of Noosa Main Beach
for events. The Policy responds to the increasing pressure being placed on Noosa Main Beach by:
Guiding Council’s approach to event applications to ensure community access to the beach
is not unreasonably diminished and that Noosa’s relaxation capital of Australia reputation is
maintained.
Ensuring that an appropriate number of events are allowed each year that provide economic
and social benefits to the local community wherever possible.
Ensuring that events enhance and contribute to the Noosa Brand.
Clearly articulating that the beach is a dynamic environment and cannot be relied upon to
provide a consistent event-to-event experience in terms of both potential beach erosion and
variable ocean conditions.
Achieving a sustainable tourism sector as well as ensuring that our lifestyle and the
environment are preserved.
RECOMMENDATION
That Council note the report by the Property Manager to the Services & Organisation Committee
Meeting dated 6 March 2018 and adopt the Noosa Main Beach Events Policy provided as
