The modelled output results illustrate that the VHC 02 vegetation with underlying upslope and
across slope topography relative to buildings has the potential to produce:
· 13.35m flame lengths
· A rate of spread of 1.5km/h
· A 23,250 kW/m fire intensity (which Byram (1959) described as the energy released per
unit time, per unit length of fire front, irrespective of depth).
Plate 13 – FLAMESOL Modelling results for VHC 02 on downslope conditions
The modelled output illustrates that the VHC 02 vegetation positioned on 10º downslope
conditions relative to buildings could be expected to produce:
· 23.03m flame lengths;
· A rate of spread of 2.99km/h; and
· A 46,353 kW/m fire intensity (which Byram (1959) described as the energy released per
unit time, per unit length of fire front, irrespective of depth).
Hence the VHC 02 hazardous vegetation on the modelled downslope topography represents
potential to exhibit approximately double the rate of spread and fire intensity output compared to
the VHC 02 hazardous vegetation positioned on level to upslope topography under the same
