4.2 Development Traffic Generation
This is a relatively small‐scale development, which is not covered by recent information collated in the
Department of Transport and Main Roads’ ‘Traffic Generation Data – 2006 – 2017 (Queensland) Open
Data’. As such, reference has been made to the ‘Guide to Traffic Generating Development’ document,
issued by the Roads and Traffic Authority New South Wales. Reference to this document indicates that the
following peak hour trip generation rates are appropriate:
Shopping Centre:
- Convenience Shop Component: 15.5 trips / 100sq.m / hour in the peak hour.
- Office Component: 2.2 trips / 100sq.m / hour in the peak hour.
Residential: 0.85 trips / unit / hour in the peak hour.
Application of the above rates to the proposed development anticipates peak hour traffic generation for
the proposed uses as per Table 4.1.
Table 4.1: Trip Generation
Use Size Trip Generation Rate Trip Generation (Volume)
Shop 380sq.m 15.5 trips / 100sq.m / hr 58.9 trips / hr
Office 317sq.m 2.2 trips / 100sq.m / hr 7.0 trips / hr
Residential 4 units 0.85 trips / unit / hr 3.4 trips / hr
Total 69.3 trips / hr
The proposed development is therefore expected to result in a peak hour traffic generation of 70 trips.
Of relevance to this Application, however, is the convenience nature of the proposed Shop component. It is
anticipated that this component will have an element of drop in traffic. Reference to Appendix F of DTMR’s
GARID document indicates that for Shopping Centres of this size, some 18% of traffic is Undiverted Drop‐In
traffic. Applying this to the Shop component of the development anticipates 10 Undiverted Drop‐In trips
(5 in / 5 out) and 60 New or Link‐Diverted trips.
To determine site generated directional movements, the assumption in Table 4.2 have been adopted.
