The J
Attachment G – Concept Plans
18.12.2014
A conceptual study into the feasibility of expanding The J
theatre
by Levesque & Derrick Architects Pty Ltd in association with
Peter Roy, FRAIA and architect of the Brisbane PowerHouse.
The Director of Community Services at Noosa Council , Alan Rogers, requested Lévesque & Derrick
Architects to review The J Theatre and to make a brief conceptual study in the potential for;
increased audience capacity;
improvements in the acoustic response of the theatre;
enlargement of stage and backstage areas.
Peter Roy, an architect with significant experience in theatre design, visited The J with Alan Rogers in
October 2014 to review the existing J Theatre, and explore the feasibility of increasing the audience
capacity of the theatre.
Subsequently Peter has refined his initial thinking by developing a series of conceptual sketches 052;
A01, A02, A03 (attached) and by providing the following written commentary.
Audience Capacity
The present capacity can be increased to 430-450 without encroaching on to the stage area by;
Replacing telescopic/retractable seating with fixed seating utilising the space saved by more
efficient circulation;
Expanding the seating in to the existing foyer (see drawing A01 and A02).
Side balconies could be added to enhance the atmosphere to the theatre.
The “low section” of seating shown in section 2 – A02 can be covered over to allow an increased flat
area which will enable Cabaret Performances.
New entries from the upstairs foyer level are made possible by structural alteration to the new fixed
seating arrangement.
Entry from the existing external foyer is still possible with alteration to levels and door locations.
Incursion into the existing upper foyer will mean loss of toilets, some structural alterations and
changes to air conditioning systems.
Acoustics
The theatre at present is acoustically fairly dull and consequently the presentation of live music,
especially Classical music could be improved.
