PLANNING & ORGANISATION COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 14 OCTOBER 2014
Ey PROPOSAL FOR A BOUNDARY CHANGE
Although community consultations are continuing and a definitive assessment of
the level of community support has still to be finalised, members of the local
community are now asking the question -“what is the view of the Noosa
Council”?
Accordingly, this submission has been prepared to allow the Noosa Council time
to consider the arguments ahead of our finalising our community consultation
process. Despite a small contingent of very vocal detractors in our community,
all the anecdotal and current survey data suggests that there is still strong
community support and we will know definitely by late October the extent of this
support across the different suburbs. It is our contention that together with our
demonstrating community support for a boundary change, we need strong
support from Noosa Council for the Minister to be prepared to refer the matter to
the Change Commission.
Request
We are seeking the following support from the Noosa Council:
1. A commitment to the principles of community of interest (i.e. communities
that share a common interest through geographic proximity, regular cross
border use, significant linkages and interaction and shared values should
be part of one local government area);
2. Recognition that if the community of interest between the EDV area and
Noosa is strong, that the Council would be happy to have that community
as part of the Shire;
3. Recognition that there is good evidence of the level of community interest
across the EDV area and the Noosa Shire;
4. A commitment to the principle that the community wishes are a key
component of government decision making and that if a majority of
residents in any or all of the suburbs in the EDV area want to belong to
Noosa Shire, then the Council would be supportive for a Change
Commissioner to investigate a boundary change
We are also seeking a public statement of the Council’s position to be sent to the
media and to the Minister.
