PLANNING & ORGANISATION COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 14 OCTOBER 2014
Eye PROPOSAL FOR A BOUNDARY CHANGE
HISTORY OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOUNDARIES IN THE SUNSHINE
COAST AND COOLOOLA REGIONS
In the 19" Century all Queensland local government boundaries were drawn up
based on water catchments and rivers as these often formed useful natural
boundaries to define communities at a time of few roads and bridges.
a " . In the last 125 years there have

~* Beach into Noosa Shire in 2003.?
When the Local Government Reform Commission was established to investigate
Council amalgamations in 2007 our community argued strongly for Noosa Shire
not to be amalgamated with Maroochy and Caloundra Shires but instead to make
a boundary change to incorporate the EDV areas into Noosa. This was
supported by the Coolum and Peregian Springs communities who argued that
2 In 1879, part of the area north of Brisbane was called the Caboolture Division and encompassed some of the
current Moreton and all of the Sunshine Coast local authority areas. North of Caboolture Division, Widgee
Division included the area north of Caboolture as far as Gympie. Maroochy shire (then Division) split away
from Caboolture in 1890 and much later on Buderim in the south and Kenilworth in the north east became part
of that Shire. The Noosa Shire was formed by being excised from Widgee Shire together with a small strip
along the northern border of Maroochy in 1909 and was formally established in 1910. The Shire of
Landsborough was split away from Caboolture in 1912 and in 1987 was renamed the City of Caloundra.
3 In the early 1990s, the State Government undertook a major review of local government boundaries across
Queensland inviting submissions from local government. At the time, the Noosa Council made a submission
based on the following areas being included in Noosa Shire in order of priority:
= First, the whole of the Lake Macdonald catchment (at the time Noosa’s only source of raw water) with
some of the catchment outside of the Shire);
= Second, the whole of the Lake Weyba catchment;
. Third, the whole of the urban area of Peregian Beach.
No changes were made to the Noosa boundaries at that time; however pressure for change continued with
momentum gathering for the southern area of Peregian Beach to be shifted into Noosa Shire which occurred in
2003.
