3.3 Quantitative Modelling
Quantitative modelling of the potential bushfire conditions that may be experienced within the site
has been undertaken using the FLAMESOL Bushfire Attack Level Calculator. The FLAMESOL
calculator is a FPAA endorsed computer software modelling program that utilizes industry
standard bushfire equations and allows numerous input variables to be adjusted including fuel
loads, fire danger index, site slope and distance to vegetation. FLAMESOL uses the following
algorithms:
· Rate of Spread – McArthur (1973) and Nobel et al. (1980)
· Flame Length – NSW Rural Fire Service (2001) and Nobel et al. (1980)
· Elevation of Receiver – Douglas and Tan (2005)
· Flame Angle – Douglas and Tan (2005)
· Radian Heat Flux – Drysdale (1999), Sullivan et al. (2003) and Douglas and Tan (2005)
Fuel load inputs have been drawn from Leonard et al. (2014) based on the calculated potential
fuel loads for the dominant hazardous vegetation unit acting on the site (VHC 02 – Open forest /
woodlands – shrubby). Two sets of slope inputs have been assessed based on the dominant
upslope conditions underlying the vegetation in the south and east of the site (refer to Plate 12)
as well as the dominant downslope conditions in the north and north-west (refer to Plate 13).
