INFRASTRUCTURE & SERVICES COMMITTEE MEETING AGENDA 17 JUNE 2014

3. Summary

It is unknown how long the flying fox colony will remain at Wallace Park. In 2007 a large number
of flying foxes camped on Weyba Creek and left after one season. It is likely that the majority of
Wallace Park flying foxes will remain until their food source diminishes. One of their main food
sources is Melaleuca which flowers between March to July and often flowers in response to rain.
It is also likely that a small resident population of flying foxes (approximately 1500 bats) will
always remain in the Noosa area.

Finance & Risk

There is no current specific budget provision for flying fox disperal. If the Council accepts the
recomendation that Option 2A be implemented, the funding for Option 2A can be met from
unspent contract services (Budget no. 2406 – 61183) in the Environmental Services Co-
ordination budget. The budget of $13,000 has only had $2,500 spent to date.
