                            PROPOSED RECONFIGURATION OF A LOT
216 BLACK MOUNTAIN ROAD, BLACK MOUNTAIN

4.0 METHOD OF INVESTIGATION
4.1 Fieldwork
Four test pits (designated TP1 to TP4) were excavated within the nominated building envelop, and one test
pit (designated TP5) was dug around the position of the proposed driveway. Test pits were dug using a
small, 6 tonne tracked excavator.
Test pits reached depths of 2.3 m and 3.0 m below ground level (BGL) and were generally terminated at
bucket refusal (based on a 6 tonne excavator). In situ soil strength was assessed using a pocket
penetrometer (PP) in test pit sidewalls and in recovered spoil. Borehole locations are shown in Figure 1.

The fieldwork was undertaken in the presence of an experienced engineering geologist from Tectonic on
17 May 2018. The engineering geologist was responsible for logging soil and rock profiles in accordance
with AS1726 Geotechnical site investigations, making groundwater observations. Undisturbed U63 tubes in
clay, and disturbed soil samples, were collected for subsequent laboratory testing. Boreholes were
backfilled with spoil on completion, with excess spoil mounded at the surface.

Borehole reports are attached in Appendix A, together with explanatory notes.

4.2 Laboratory Testing
An undisturbed U63 tube sample was dispatched to Coffey Services Australia Pty Ltd, a NATA accredited
geotechnical laboratory located in Brisbane, for geotechnical testing. Laboratory testing was undertaken in
accordance with Australian Standard AS1289 Method for Testing Soils for Engineering Purposes and
comprised analysis for Shrink Swell Index.

Refer to Section 5.3 for a summary of results.
