EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Munna Point foreshore was severely eroded during Cyclone Oswald in January 2013. The
erosion caused large trees to become undermined and also a large scarp had developed along
the shoreline. Council immediately installed a geofabic wall as emergent works to stop further
erosion. The Development Approval for these emergent works asked for Council to look at a
permanent solution to address erosion at this site.
The Department of Environment and Heritage Protection recommended Council trial a groyne
field to address the erosion and channel issues which will ensure that any sand nourishment on
the Munna Point Caravan site would be protected.
RECOMMENDATION
That Council note the report by the Coastal & Foreshores Technical Officer to the Infrastructure &
Services Committee Meeting dated 3 March 2015 providing an update on the Munna Point
Caravan Park Foreshore Protection project.
REPORT
The purpose of this report is to advise the Committee of the design, cost estimate and
approximate timelines for the Munna Point Caravan Park Foreshore Protection project.
Design
It is proposed to install three geofabric groynes along with a geofabric scour mattress. The
purpose of this construction is to trap sand between the groynes to maintain a beach profile and
manage the channel flow away from the eroded foreshore to allow sand renourishment. A copy
of the design drawings is provided at Attachment 1.
Cost Estimate
A cost estimate was produced by the consultant International Coastal Management (ICM), for the
three groynes, however their estimate did not include the placement and filling of the three scour
mattresses which were required. Our total cost estimate for all three groynes including scour
mattresses and contingency is $62,000.
Timelines
Designs have been completed. Applications have been lodged with the Department of State
Development, Infrastructure and Planning with approval usually taking 6 to 8 weeks. Approvals
are expected to be finalised mid-April.
It is anticipated that construction will then be completed by the end of May 2015.
