2.1. Collection Methods
Broodstock would be collected fi..om a number of different
waterways throughout the Mary River Catchment, thus ensuring genetic
diversity. These would include, but not be limited to tributaries, such as
Obi Obi, Six Mile, Coondoo and Tinana. Brood stock sourced from the
Coomera and Pine River systems would be utilised for non
environmental stockings outside the Mary River Catchment. Collection
methods such as Electro fishing, Lure and Line fishing, and gill netting
would be utilised. Best fish handling practises would be as rigorously
adhered to once captured, with the use of non abrasive nets and slings.
2.2. Handling Treatments
Once captured the fish will be transported back to the hatchery in
suitably sized tanks with ample clean, fresh water and oxygen. Once back
at the hatchery the fish would be anesthetised with Clove Oil, sexed and
a "PIT"tag placed in the right shoulder. This information would then be
collated in the form of a "Brood stock register"(See Fig 4).
The brood stock would then be placed through a rigorous, veterinary
prescribed, prophylactic treatment regime. The treatment regime would
be carried out in specifically isolated and covered 2000 litre tanks, away
from the main production area.
2.3. Holding Tanks in Hatchery
During the hot summer months the Brood stock would be removed
from the ponds and individually housed in 3300 litre tanks inside the
Hatchery Building. These tanks will be linked to a Re-circulated water
treatment system, maintaining optimal water quality parameters. Each
tank will have its own hide/pipe for cover. A detailed "Indoor Brood
stock Placement" register (SeeFig 5)would be established, documenting
tank number, fish PIT tag number, sex and size.
2.4. Pond Placement
Brood stock will be placed into ponds when water temperatures
allow, generally around MarchiApril. The ponds will be prepared with
four breeding pipes, of at least two metres in length per pond. These
pipes will be lined with a hard plastic liner and fly screen for the capture
of eggs. Two pairs of similarly sized Brood stock, from varying capture
locations, will be placed into the ponds on the same day to try to alleviate
territorial fighting. A detailed "Pond Placement" register (See Fig 6)will
be established.
