Strategy: Identify all potentially hazardous substances used on site and provide
appropriate storage and handling areas.
Responsibility: Site Environmental Officer and Superintendent.
Management Actions:
1. Establish and maintain a hazardous substance register to be kept on-site, including Material
Safety Data Sheets.
2. Register is to include herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, fertilisers, paints and paint products,
cleaning fluids. The volumes of these materials held on site are to be minimized as much as
possible.· Bagged powdered material (eg cement) is to be stored in approved containers.
3. Where practicable, minimise the amount of fuel and oils stored on-site. Preferred option for re-
fuelling to be carried out by mini-tanker delivering to site. No refuelling to be conducted within
100m from residence or wetlands. Refuelling to be conducted in designated areas and suitably
bunded and lined. Refuelling tanker is to have the necessary clean-up equipment.
4. Any fuel and oils stored on-site to be contained by watertight bunds or spill trays with adequate
capacity to prevent release to environment in the case of leaks or accidental spillage.
5. Refuelling to be carried out by suitably qualified personnel and in clearly defined areas free from
potential ignition sources.
6. Storage areas to be secure from vandalism.
7. All staff using hazardous substances to be trained in safe handling and storage requirements as
part of Induction Program.
8. Any clean-up required is to be undertaken as quickly as possible (refer Incident procedure).
9. Clean-up materials (as recommended by EPA) to be kept on site in clearly marked location.
