TABLE 3B TEMPORARY CUT BATTER ANGLES (Depths 2.5m to 5m)
                              Material Temporary Batter Angle (o)
Very Loose to Loose/Fill NR (Temporary shoring to be adopted)
Sandy Soils Medium Dense 26 (1V:2H)
Dense to Very Dense 35 (1V:1.45H)
Soft to Firm/Fill NR (Temporary shoring to be adopted)
Clay Soils Stiff 30 (1V:1.75H)
Very Stiff to Hard 35 (1V:1.65H)

Inspection of cut batters should be carried out by a Geotechnical Engineer from Soil
Surveys Engineering, at the COMMENCEMENT OF BULK EXCAVATION WORKS, to
confirm the stability of temporary cut batters.

Excavations must also consider the stability/integrity of adjacent structures, services,
elements in regard to potential destabilisation in the generation of lateral movement
and/or settlement of these. Measure to address potential adverse effects could include,
amongst others, repositioning of excavations/tanks etc., underpinning of structures,
temporary support (propping of structures, as appropriate). Soil Surveys Engineering
should be contacted should such a potential situation arise.

Refer to Section 6.5 for comments on temporary retention.

    6.3 Site Classification

           6.3.1 General

While a site classification in accordance with AS 2870 'Residential Slabs and Footings' relates
to residential type construction and is not directly applicable for this development, it is, however,
a valuable method of classification.

Considering the presence of the existing fill and the existing and proposed development works
the site is classified as a Class ‘P’ site in accordance with AS 2870 ‘Residential Slabs and
Footings’.

Please note Class ‘P’ does not signify any particular severe problem, but rather that the site is
disqualified from the other classes and therefore requires special consideration using
engineering principles.

In terms of reactivity, a characteristic surface movement (ys) of <20mm has been calculated for
the existing subsurface profile.

It should be noted that potential differential settlements induced by densification of the weak fill
and natural soils under loading will be in addition to any characteristic value.

For the purpose of design of sanitary drainage/plumbing systems It should be noted that a soil
classification to AS 2870 is Class ‘S’ (Slightly Reactive) based on site considerations.

It is recommended that the footing and slab systems be designed to accommodate the
anticipated ground surface movement.

Also, it is recommended that the designer satisfy themself that the use of AS 2870 is applicable
for the proposed design.

                                                                                                            SOIL SURVEYS
