Wessel Petroleum Pty Ltd – Acid Sulfate Soil Investigation and Management Plan - Proposed Service Station Reconstruction, 52-54 Mary Street and
Weyba Road, Noosaville
Objective
The objective of the ASSMP is to control net acidity levels within the soils disturbed during
construction and to restrict to an acceptable level any potential on-site and off-site
environmental impacts during construction.
Disturbance Due to Filling
In accordance with SPP 2013 ASS Guideline, assessment of potential disturbance to insitu ASS
from filling is required. Considering investigation findings, geotechnical engineering analysis
and proposed earthworks, we advise the following:-
Actual ASS not currently in contact with water will not contact groundwater due to filling
given the on-site material characteristics (strength, etc.) and the filling proposed.
Potential ASS will not be displaced/extruded due to filling given the on-site material
characteristics (strength, etc.) and the proposed filling.
The above has been considered in formulating the ASSMP.
Groundwater
The hydrological regimes that operate in an area affect the behaviour of ASS and the transport
of oxidation products. Considering investigation findings and the proposed development, we
advise the following:-
Filling activities, where carried out, will not cause changes to the groundwater regime
given the proposed filling.
Groundwater is expected to be encountered during construction.
The above has been considered in formulating the ASSMP.
The following section, which have been prepared in accordance with Appendix B of SPP 2013
ASC guidelines, present the recommended ASSMP for this site.
ASS Management Strategies
The preferred management strategy for ASS is to avoid or minimise the disturbance of these
materials.
Given the proposed development, avoidance of ASS will not be possible and neutralisation of
the disturbed material will be required.
To mitigate and manage potential environmental impacts associated with ASS during the
construction works. This will be achieved as follows:-
The excavation of soils during construction requires a material handling management
strategy and procedure for the appropriate treatment of the ASS to be in place.
Monitoring of groundwater collected within the site to ensure discharge water complies
with water quality criteria.
