Remnant munitions could be in conditions ranging from benign to highly unstable and become
increasingly sensitive to shock or fire. White Phosphorus (WP) can remain dormant in the soil or
containers for many years but spontaneously ignite when exposed to air (causes severe, deep burns
on flesh) – WP is also toxic if sufficient quantities are inhaled or ingested.
