PROJECT: NOOSA SPRINGS BOUTIQUE HOTEL

SUBJECT: SUSTAINABLE DESIGN REPORT -”CREATING A GREEN DEVELOPMENT”

Creating a green development is thought often to be about following a formula, for the use of
specific environmental design features. This approach often follows the form of a Cartesian view
which seeks to reduce ecologically sustainable design in constituent elements. This comes across as
having a negative sentiment and an auditing perspective. It does little to promote sustainable design
as a creative and poetic activity, which is a synthesis both of the creative and innovative activities of
the design professional. A more effective approach as used here for the Noosa Springs Boutique
Hotel project is to examine a project with a holistic perspective. This can link the environmental
potential of building with the use of particular design strategies. In the case of energy, this ensures
that the discussion focuses on the energy conservation generated by a building plan and envelope
strategies. When considering site impact, the focus extends to construction and structural
approaches.



A holistic approach clearly identifies key environmental relationships in the design and can avoid a
kind of environmental tokenism which comes from reducing environmental design to the selection
of appropriate technical systems. Green design is not a set of add-on features, it is a synthesis of
technology and poetics in place. At an exhibition called “Ten Shades of Green” at the New York
Urban Centre in 2000, ten projects from around the world were selected for their contribution to
Green Architecture. The apparent strategies found in these projects were;


•       Demonstrating sensitivity to the natural eco system and context of the place.
        Demonstrating a sensitivity to the eco efficiency of construction of the building; its
        materials, components and systems.
•       Taking a whole of life cycle perspective through loose fit, long life structures which integrate
        preventative maintenance strategies to ensure durability.



Ecologically sustainable designed housing should touch the senses and sensibilities, and reach into
the elemental way one lives and connects to the environment. In this project we have emphasised
the relationship between people, place and climate as a poetic force to which we can return again
and again for meaning and reference. There are subtle connections between culture, building form
and the way this compliments the experience of the climate. It seems important in this project at
Noosa Springs to find the space, places and strategies that offer the inhabitants a level of delight as
well as thermal comfort. It is also important to develop a design which responds to some of the
major environmental issues that are confronting designers in the urban environment including that
of the heat island effect and the densification of urban areas.
