RAIL NOISE

Measured Noise Levels

For the statistical parameters rail noise was assessed (unattended noise logger) from monitoring
location A, which would have included other ambient noise sources such as traffic noise from Elm
Street, birds, etc, whilst for maximum rail passby noise this was assessed from the same location, but
from the audio file of the noise logger, which was post analysed in the office.

Monitoring location A was approximately 47 metres from the centre of the railway tracks to the west of
the subject site, with the microphone elevated approximately 1.6 metres above ground level. Refer
Appendix A for details of noise level measurement equipment, equipment settings, calibration,
monitoring location and atmospheric conditions and Appendix B for complete details of results of noise
level measurements at monitoring location A.

For monitoring location A, in accordance with Appendix B, the following noise levels should be noted
relative to the requirements of AO25.1, despite the fact that a portion of the noise was due to traffic
activity:

Wednesday 2 June 2021
 LAeq,24h = 54.1 dB(A)

Thursday 3 June 2021
 LAeq,24h = 54.9 dB(A)

With respect to the single event maximum rail noise levels for train passbys, Table 1 details the
maximum noise levels at monitoring location B, for each 1-hour period, relative to the requirements of
AO25.1. It should be noted that Table 1 includes only those trains which were clearly discernible –
there would have been a number of additional train movements which were rendered inaudible due to
traffic noise. It should also be noted that this train line comprises passenger trains and freight trains and
the below rail maximum noise levels includes freight trains.
