The purpose of the Noosa Council Koala Conservation Policy is to provide a coordinated and
structured framework to help conserve and protect koala populations and habitat within the
Noosa Shire.
Information gained through the public consultation process and discussion with key stakeholders,
has been considered in the development of the Noosa Koala Policy (Attachment 2). The Noosa
Koala Policy addresses the following key policy areas:
Habitat protection
Improved understanding of koala needs
Mapping and monitoring local koala populations
Development decision-making
Infrastructure decisions

A cautious approach to supporting koala translocation
Increased community awareness and participation
To implement the policy, it is proposed to develop a Koala Conservation Plan which will include
practical and tangible actions on the ground to help protect and conserve koalas and their
habitat.

Koala Conservation Plan will address key policy areas identified in the Koala Policy including:
Latest koala habitat mapping;
Known abundance, distribution and behaviour of koalas across Noosa Shire;
Measures to protect koala populations and habitat;
Identification of threats to Noosa’s koalas and avoiding/mitigating impacts on koalas;
